Seek the Beauty

One of the mistakes we make too often as spiritual people is not taking the time to see the beauty of the world around us. I know I’m guilty of this too often. It is far too easy to get wrapped up in my struggles, my disability, my continuing to fight cancer, the trash fire that is American politics it is easy to think the world is all bad and that we are alone and isolated.

My spirituality focuses on the beauty of the world and through my practice I tune myself into that. In other words, my ritual intentionally is a way to connect to the beauty of the world around me. If ten years ago you had told me that I would be in a wheelchair, only able to eat anything significate through a feeding tube, I would have thought I would be deeply unhappy with my life. Nothing could be further from the truth.

The love of the people around me. The beauty of nature. Things like watching the snow fall this morning or sitting in my backyard remind me how beautiful the world we live in is. My health has really brought that into such clear focus.

When you have had 30+ surgeries and you know what it is to not to be able to honestly be sure of tomorrow, it really brings into focus what is on your mind. I assure you, I was not thinking about all that ugliness out there. For me I thought about my friends, family, the things I love, and the beauty I have seen. Being myself mattered, what the rest of the world thinks about that, didn’t.

That is what our spirituality should do. It should drive us to be the most fully us that we can be. This world doesn't need the next of anything, instead we need you, all of you. By living into who we are in the most unafraid, most brave ways we can, that’s how we create a world that has more diversity and more beauty.

By being one’s own self we grow and encourage others to do the same.  The more people this world has who see the beauty in the what they see then the more people can share that beauty with others. This is the beauty of art. It is a way of sharing the beauty and that point of view with one another. It is easy to start thinking we are the only one who cares. We need to connect with each other, see one another's beauty and grow because it connects us in new unique ways.

Don't let the world crush you! Bring your own vision of beauty into the world. That is holy, the unlimited beauty and the more we tune into it the easier it is to see. Don't let the ugliness around you win. It is joy, truth, happiness, and full humanness that brings it into the world. To win we must tend to those little joys that we too easily dismiss.

Share your joy, share your love, share your passion, and share your beauty. You have so much beauty to share, bring it into the world for us all to see.
